Spark plug thread repair

Is one of your spark plug threads damaged?  Maybe the spark plug has been cross threaded?  Has a previous owner made an incorrect repair?  Below is the proper technique to repair spark plug threads.

Some people may tell you otherwise, but to properly repair the threads of a spark plug, the cylinder head must be removed.  As tempting as it might be to perform the repair with the cylinder head installed, the risk of serious damage caused by debris entering the cylinder and potentially damaging the piston, piston rings or cylinder wall is too great/costly.

If you remove one of your spark plugs and see something like this, you need to correct the improper repair.

Here is what the spark plug above looked like when its FULLY seated from inside the engine.  Notice how the spark plug is shrouded and not protruding into the combustion chamber.  This will cause poor performance and economy not to mention greatly reducing plug life.

Here is what a properly seated spark plug should look like from inside the engine. Notice the spark plug body is fully threaded into the cylinder head and the electrode protrudes into the combustion chamber.

You can NOT use heli-coil or other standard thread repair tools/techniques to repair spark plug threads. They do not provide a proper seat for the plug nor conduct heat properly. The proper tool is called a TIMESERT. The inserts are not costly but the installation tool isn't cheap. If you need this repair done, and don't do this all the time, find a buddy or a shop who has the TIMESERT tools and inserts.
